We were one of the first VPN providers to be audited back in 2015, as we saw it as an important step in proving to our users that we can be trusted with their data. To continue with that legacy, we have been audited once again and have passed confidently. If you would like a deeper dive into what this means, continue reading below.
What’s the point of an Audit?
You can state a VPN service stores zero logs, but how can you prove that? As a regular end user, it isn’t possible. That is where auditing comes in.
In a move to show that when we say zero-logs, we really mean zero-logs, we contracted an independent party to examine our server configurations. The ultimate aim of this is to verify that our no-log policy is being complied with as described in our documentation.
Introducing Securitum
We contracted Securitum, a leading provider of security auditing in Europe, founded in 2009. They are prolific and well respected within the industry; with a proven track record for VPN audits in particular.
All of their work is backed up with the relevant certifications, so they can be trusted to find any issues if they exist.
What was investigated?
Securitum set out the scope of its audit very clearly:
- Is user’s activity tracked on VPN servers handling traffic?
- Are DNS traffic or similar logs stored on VPN servers?
- Do VPN servers monitor or log traffic?
- Is there any monitoring or logging of the services used by user present on servers?
- Is there any monitoring or logging of the services used by specific VPN server?
- Is there any process to detect unauthorized configuration changes (for example enabling logging)? Is an automatic alert triggered?
- Is logging enabled in the VPN configuration files?
- Is the information about which VPN server the user is currently connected to logged?
No-Logs Policy Confirmed
Considering all of Securitum’s questions, we are proud to say that hide.me VPN passed this audit. Securitum said:
“As a result of the audit, it was confirmed, that declared by Hide.me no-logs policy is indeed applied, and the audit did not reveal any issues on VPN container that could lead to a compromise of user privacy.”
You can find the summary of the report here.
It’s all about trust
The point of this audit was to continue showing that hide.me VPN is a service that you can trust with your data. We take this business very seriously, and this audit is proof that we are trustworthy.
