Windows Common VPN Errors Codes Explained

Last modified: August 27, 2019

In this article we will go through the most common of VPN errors. Suggested solution will follow after the most frequent cause. Without further ado, let’s solve some errors.

Error codes and what you can do about them
Q: VPN Error 619

A: The connection could not be established (very general).
Cause: The causes may vary. There might be a conflict with another VPN client or a firewall.
Solution: Check if your router forwards VPN connections (keyword “VPN passthrough”). Disable your firewall (temporarily) and try to connect again. Connect with alternative VPN protocol and check if the problem persists. In addition, you can connect it with an alternative client such as OpenVPN (only for Premium).

Q: VPN Error 691

A: User authentication failed.
Cause: The VPN connection is still active or the login credentials were entered incorrectly
Solution: Check whether there are any active VPN connections. Visit your Members area in order to do so. Therefore, close them, if any. In addition, make sure that you are using correct username and password.

Q: VPN Error 711

A: Remote Access Connection Manager service failed to start on time.
Cause: Windows RAS service has a problem.
Solution: Restart the “Remote Access Connection Manager” service via Computer Management.

Q: VPN Error 720

A: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection.
Cause: Corrupted miniport drivers.
Solution: Press-and-hold Windows Key and letter R to open Run dialog box. Type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Next, expand Network Adapter on the right side. After that, uninstall all adapters starting with “WAN Miniport“. Do so with Right-click and choose uninstall. Finally, reboot your computer.

Q: VPN Error 807/809

A: Could not establish a VPN connection.
Cause: The connection is probably blocked by a software firewall (Error 807) or by your router (Error 809).
Solution: Disable your software firewall and also check if your router is blocking VPN connections. In addition, connect with a different protocol. Most firewalls keep the port 443 open. For that reason, use SSTP, OpenVPN or SoftEther connection as they should not be blocked.

Q: VPN Error 811

A: Error: The connection could not been established, as the server address could not be resolved.
Cause: Your DNS server can not resolve (e.g. free-nl.hide.me the free server address).
Solution: Set up your own DNS server in your network adapter / router or enter the IP address of the VPN server instead of the server hostname (or nl.hide.me). For latter, contact our Technical support
